Producer: Dale Griffin
Engineer: Ted de Bono
Band members: Kurt Cobain (vocals, guitar), Krist Novoselic (bass), & Chad Channing (drums)
Recorded:
[U] About A Girl
[U] Love Buzz
[U] Polly
[U] Spank Thru
Sources: The best source for this radio session is the Westwood CD 'In Concert', which contains a pre-FM version from the DAT master tapes. All bootleg releases (for example, as available on 'The Complete Radio Sessions') are inferior, being taken from post-FM radio broadcasts.
Notes: The band were fortunate enough to land a slot on the acclaimed John Peel Show, and recorded a session for broadcast. The first broadcast was on broadcast November 22nd 1989. There was a subsequent broadcast on January 22nd 1990. 'Spank Thru' was titled 'Spanx thru' on the official records. (22)
Producer, Dale Griffin remembers, "The first Nirvana session was very relaxed. Kurt played and sang live. He looked young and fresh-faced." (33)
"The band was well rehearsed - all too often not the case with many bands, especially on the John Peel sessions - and we were soon into mixing the songs." (33)
Tracks were mixed onto quarter inch tape at 15ips (for broadcast and also onto DAT tape, for back-up). The session would have been recorded on a 2 inch analogue tape, running at 30ips with no Dolby. (33)
"These 2inch tapes were used over and over again for successive sessions, so none of the 'multi-track' (or unmixed) BBC recordings of Nirvana remain, sadly." (33)
All three Peel Sessions have been aired all over the world several times, notably including all three sessions consecutively by John Peel himself in 1994
